5 Things Only Night Shift Nurses Understand (Besides Charting at 4am)
Let’s be honest: if you’ve ever stood in the med room at 2am debating whether to cry, caffeinate, or cry while caffeinating — welcome to the night shift club. No one survives nights without at least a little emotional damage, a lot of coffee, and a completely broken sleep schedule.
Here are 5 truths every night nurse feels in their soul:
- Coffee is its own food group: Is it dinner? Breakfast? A midnight pick-me-up? All of the above. If it’s hot and caffeinated, it counts. Add a granola bar and you’ve got yourself a Michelin-star shift meal.
- The "sleep hangover" is too real: That solid 5-hour nap after your shift? Lies. You wake up in a daze, not sure if it’s Monday or Mars. Rested? Who’s she?
- The loudest noises happen the moment the unit goes quiet: You finally sit down. The floor is calm. Then — code alarm, paper jam, and Karen in Room 4 demanding her fifth ginger ale with ice cubes all at once. Coincidence? Never!
- Charting after midnight feels like solving a puzzle...blindfolded: Our brain is in power-save mode, the charting system refreshes or it's downtime (again), and suddenly your patient's vitals look like they belong to a giraffe (IV bolus time). You do your best. We see you.
- Night shift weirdness: At some point, it’s less about care plans and more about ghost stories, existential dread, and interpretive dance in the break room. We get a little weird — but honestly? We’ve earned it.
